Chess Basics

Each player starts with 16 pieces: a king, a queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns. Every piece moves in its own way. The goal is checkmate: attack the other king so that it cannot escape. White always moves first.

• Develop your pieces instead of moving one piece many times.
• Castle early to keep your king safe.
• Check every move: is any of your pieces left unprotected?
