Table of Contents
The series was created by Oslo Albet, and the first game, Fireboy and Watergirl in the Forest Temple, came out in 2009. More than 15 years later it is still one of the most loved co-op games at school and at home, because it rewards teamwork, patience and clever thinking rather than fast reactions.
How to Play Fireboy and Watergirl
- Control both heroes. One player controls Fireboy and the other controls Watergirl. If you play alone, you switch between them yourself.
- Avoid the wrong pools. Fireboy is safe in red lava but loses in blue water. Watergirl is safe in water but loses in lava. Both lose in green goo.
- Use the level. Pull levers, stand on buttons, push boxes and ride platforms to open the way for your partner.
- Collect gems. Fireboy collects red gems and Watergirl collects blue gems.
- Reach both doors. Fireboy must stand at the red door and Watergirl at the blue door at the same time to finish the level.
- Go for a better rank. Finish faster and collect every gem to earn a higher score.
Fireboy and Watergirl Controls
| Action | Player 1 | Player 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Move left / right | Left / Right Arrow (Fireboy) | A / D (Watergirl) |
| Jump | Up Arrow (Fireboy) | W (Watergirl) |
Fireboy uses the arrow keys and Watergirl uses W, A and D. Playing alone? Use both sets of keys yourself. On an iPad or tablet, use the on-screen buttons the game shows for touch play.
Fire, Water and Green Goo: The Rules
| Pool | Fireboy | Watergirl |
|---|---|---|
| Red lava | Safe | Game over |
| Blue water | Game over | Safe |
| Green goo | Game over | Game over |
Remember this table and you'll avoid most mistakes. Many puzzles are built around these rules: often only one character can cross a pool, so they must open the path for the other.
Levers, Buttons, Boxes and Platforms
Every temple is a puzzle made of simple parts that only work when you use them together:
- Levers move platforms or open gates. Sometimes one player has to hold the right position while the other crosses.
- Buttons only work while someone stands on them, so one character often waits while the other moves.
- Boxes can be pushed onto buttons or used as steps to reach higher ledges.
- Moving platforms carry you across gaps, but only if you time your jump.
- Special objects appear in later temples, such as light beams, mirrors, ice and wind, each adding a new kind of puzzle.
Gems, Time and Ranks
Finishing a level is only the first goal. At the end of each level you get a rank based on how fast you were and how many gems you collected. Fireboy can only pick up red gems and Watergirl can only pick up blue ones, so both players have to take a few detours. Getting the best rank on every level is a challenge in itself: you need a route that grabs every gem without wasting time or falling into the wrong pool. Many players finish the temple once to learn it, then come back to perfect every level.
How to Solve a New Level
- Stop and look. Find both exit doors, all the gems and every lever, button and box.
- Find the pools. Work out which character can cross each one.
- Spot the blocker. Usually there is one gate or platform that has to be opened first. That is where the puzzle starts.
- Decide who helps whom. One character often holds a button while the other moves, then they swap.
- Move one step at a time. Don't run ahead; wait for your partner at each stage.
- Grab the gems on the way. Collect them when they are on your route, then head for the doors together.
Playing Alone
You don't need a friend to enjoy the game. Playing solo means you control both characters on one keyboard: the arrow keys for Fireboy and W, A, D for Watergirl. The trick is to move them one at a time. Park one character somewhere safe, move the other forward, then switch. It is slower than playing with a partner, but it turns every level into a brain-teaser, because you have to plan both paths yourself.
The Fireboy and Watergirl Series
After the first adventure, the duo returned in several sequels, each with its own temple and new puzzle ideas:
| Game | What makes it different |
|---|---|
| The Forest Temple | The original: levers, buttons, boxes and the three pools |
| The Light Temple | Light beams and mirrors you aim to open doors |
| The Ice Temple | Slippery ice and water that freezes and melts |
| The Crystal Temple | Portals and crystal puzzles |
| Elements | A bigger adventure mixing many element powers |
If you enjoy this game, the rest of the series uses the same controls, so you can jump straight in.
Teamwork Tips for 2 Players
- Talk before you move. Decide who goes first and who holds the lever or button.
- Wait for each other. Rushing ahead usually means one of you gets stuck or falls into the wrong pool.
- Split the gems. Fireboy takes red, Watergirl takes blue, so plan routes that pass both.
- Say "stop" when a platform moves. Many falls happen because one player jumps too early.
- Swap roles. If one player is better at jumping, give them the harder path.
Fireboy and Watergirl Tips and Tricks
- Look at the whole level first. Find both doors and every gem before moving.
- Learn the pool rules by heart. One wrong step into the wrong pool sends you back to the start of the level.
- Use boxes as helpers. A box on a button is like a third player holding it down.
- Take your time. There's no rush: a slower clean run beats many restarts.
- Replay for a better rank. Once you know the route, go back for all the gems and a faster time.
- Playing solo? Move one character to a safe spot, then switch to the other. Do one step at a time.
Playing on PC, Chromebook and iPad
The game runs in any modern browser, so it works on Windows PCs, Macs and school Chromebooks without installing anything. On a computer, two players can sit side by side and share one keyboard comfortably, because Fireboy uses the arrow keys on the right and Watergirl uses W, A and D on the left. On an iPad or tablet, the game shows touch controls on screen. Use the fullscreen button under the game for a bigger view of the temple, which makes small gaps and gems much easier to see.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Jumping into green goo: it ends the level for both characters.
- Leaving a button too early: the gate closes on your partner.
- Pushing a box into a pit: you may need it later, so think before you push.
- Forgetting the doors: both characters must be at their own door at the same time.
Playing With a Friend
This is a true co-op game: you win together or not at all. Player 1 takes Fireboy with the arrow keys and Player 2 takes Watergirl with W, A and D on the same keyboard. It's a great game for siblings, friends and parents playing with their kids, because it's about talking and planning, not fighting.
Why Teachers and Parents Like It
Fireboy and Watergirl is often played in classrooms and at home because it builds real skills. Players have to explain their ideas to each other, take turns, wait for their partner and think a few steps ahead. A wrong move costs both players, so kids learn quickly that teamwork beats rushing. It's also a calm game: there is no timer pressure to finish, only a bonus for being fast, so players can think at their own pace.
Is Fireboy and Watergirl Good for Kids?
Yes, it's one of the best. There is no violence, no blood and no chat, just two cute characters solving puzzles. It also teaches useful skills: teamwork, communication, planning ahead and problem solving. Many teachers and parents like it for exactly that reason. Read more on our Information for Parents page.
